解説 Definition
相手が気づいていない時に不意を突いて、または本人が知らないうちにという意味で使う副詞。突然の出来事や予想外の行動によって、準備ができていない状態で驚かされる場面に多く、take someone unawares の形でよく現れる。
Unawares means without knowing or expecting what is happening. It is used when someone is surprised suddenly or is not prepared for an event.

unawares は un-「否定」+ aware に、副詞化の -s が付いた形です。aware は古英語 gewär「用心深い・気づいている」にさかのぼり、wary や beware も同根。だから『知らない』より『警戒の目が働かないまま』不意を突かれる感じが強い語です。
Unawares comes from un- plus aware, with an old adverb ending -s. Aware goes back to Old English gewaer, meaning "watchful" or "alert," and it is related to wary and beware. So the word originally suggested being caught without alertness or caution, not simply without knowledge.
