舞台などで、出演者が出られないときに代わって演じられるよう、その役を覚えて準備する俳優たち。understudy「代役」の複数形です。
Understudies are people, especially in the theater, who learn another actor's role so they can perform it if needed. They are prepared to take over when the main performer is absent or unable to act. The word is most commonly used in stage productions.
