アクロスティックは各行の最初の文字が隠されたメッセージを形成する詩です。
An acrostic is a piece of writing, often a poem, in which certain letters from each line form a word or message. It is commonly used as a creative writing form or a word puzzle.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
覚える軸は「最初の文字を縦に拾う」です。acrostic poem という形で見ると定着しやすく、各行の first letter を上から読むと、別の単語やメッセージが隠れている詩のこと。acronym も頭文字を使いますが、あちらは複数語の頭文字をまとめて1語化するもの。acrostic は lines の頭文字を縦読みする、と使用場面ごと覚えると混同しません。
Use the memory hook `A = at the start`. In an `acrostic`, the important letters are at the beginning of each line. Keep it separate from `acronym`: an acronym uses first letters of words, but an acrostic hides a message down the lines.

acrostic はギリシャ語 akros「先端の」+ stikhos「行・詩行」に由来し、ラテン語・フランス語を経て英語に入りました。distich や hemistich も stikhos と同根で、「行の端の文字を拾うと意味が立つ詩」という仕組みが語形にそのまま見えます。
"Acrostic" comes from Greek "akros," meaning "top" or "outermost," and "stikhos," meaning "line" or "verse line." It passed through Latin and French before entering English. The word originally described a poem where letters at the edge of each line form another word or message. Related words such as "distich" and "hemistich" share the same Greek root "stikhos."
