agonize は agony「苦闘」に -ize が付いた語で、agony はギリシャ語 agon「競技・闘い」にさかのぼる。antagonist や protagonist と同じ agon 系で、本来は「激しく争う」が芯。そこから心身をひりつかせるほど苦しむ意味へ広がった。
