解説 Definition
allergy は、食べ物や花粉などに対して体が過敏に反応するアレルギーという意味です。日本語の「アレルギー」とほぼ同じですが、英語では特定の物質への医学的な反応を指すことが多いです。
An allergy is an immune-system reaction to a substance, such as a food, pollen, or animal material, that is usually harmless to most people. It may cause symptoms ranging from itching or sneezing to a severe medical emergency.

ギリシャ語 allos（他の）+ ergon（反応・作用）から成る造語。1906年にオーストリアの医師が命名。「異なるものへの反応」が原義。関連語：energy（エネルギー）、allegory（寓話、allos由来）。体が本来無害な物質を「他者」と誤認して反応する、という意味が語源に表れている。
Allergy was coined in the early twentieth century by the Austrian physician Clemens von Pirquet, initially in the German form Allergie. He built it from Greek allos, “other” or “different,” and ergon, “work” or “action.” The term described an altered biological reactivity after exposure to a substance. Its meaning later narrowed in common usage to hypersensitive immune reactions to substances such as foods, pollen, medicines, or animal dander.
