aloof の語源・成り立ち Etymology
aloof は航海語で、オランダ語 loef「風上」がもと。a- を伴って「船を風上へ離して保つ」が原義だったため、そこから人にも近づかず距離を置く「よそよそしい」へ広がった。luff も同じ語根を引く語。
Aloof began as a sailing term from Dutch loef, meaning "windward side." Its original sense was to keep a ship away to windward, at a distance from something else. From that physical idea of staying apart, it later came to describe people who seem distant or emotionally removed. Luff is related to the same nautical root.
