覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず bequeath を1語で押さえると覚えやすいです。日常の give ではなく、遺言で財産を「残して譲る」というかなりフォーマルな語。bequeathing はその行為・過程を表す形。混同しやすいのは inherit で、こちらは受け取る側、bequeath は残す側です。property, estate, assets, money など相続財産の語と結びつけて覚えると定着しやすく、文脈では by will や to his children がよく並びます。
Start with `bequeath`, a formal word used in wills, not everyday `give`. Think: `inherit` is for the person who receives, but `bequeath` is for the person who leaves something behind. `Bequeathing` is the act or process, often with words like `property`, `estate`, or `to his children`.

bequeathing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
bequeathing は bequeath 由来で、古英語 becwethan にさかのぼる。be- に cweþan「言う」がつき、もとは「言い渡す」が遺言で譲る意味へ絞られた。bequest や quoth が同根で、財産移転がまず言葉による宣言だったことが見えてくる。
Bequeathing comes from bequeath, which goes back to Old English becwethan. It is made from be- plus a verb meaning "to say" or "to speak," so the older idea was to declare something formally. Over time, that sense narrowed to leaving property by spoken or written will; related words include bequest and the old form quoth.
