bilby はオーストラリア先住民語ガミラライ語 bilbi 由来で、英語内部で分けられる接頭辞や接尾辞はありません。関連形の bilbi や bilbies を見ると、英語がこの動物名を説明訳せず音ごと受け入れた語で、土地固有の生き物には在来名が強いことが見えてきます。
`Bilby` comes from `bilbi` in Gamilaraay, an Australian Aboriginal language. It is not made from smaller English parts. English borrowed the local animal name more or less as a whole, which often happens with animals that are native to one region.
