Bloodletting is the practice of taking blood from a person's body, especially as an old medical treatment. Today it is usually discussed in historical or medical contexts, and it can also be used more broadly for a heavy loss of people, money, or strength.

古英語 blood + lettan「行かせる・放つ」から成る語で、blood-letting は文字通り「血を出させること」です。let や outlet と同じく「通す・出す」の感覚があり、医療語でも構造を見れば瀉血の意味がそのまま読めます。
Bloodletting is an old English compound of blood and letting. Here let keeps an older sense, from Old English lettan, of allowing something to go out or pass, which also appears in outlet. So the word originally meant simply "letting blood out," and the form still shows that history clearly.
