二つの語源を持つ。「退屈させる」はフランス語bourrer（詰め込む）から、退屈は「うんざりするほど詰め込まれる」感覚に由来。「穴を開ける」は古英語borian（穿つ）でゲルマン祖語*burōnに遡り、bore（穴）やburrow（巣穴）と同根。一語に異なる語源が合流した珍しい例である。
The noun bore combines historically separate developments. The “hole” sense is related to Old English borian, “to pierce or drill,” from a Germanic word family also associated with making openings. The “dull person or thing” sense arose from the verb bore, “to make weary through lack of interest”; its deeper origin is less certain and has been linked to French bourrer, “to stuff.” The identical spelling therefore does not indicate one shared original meaning.
