An entertainer is a person whose job is to perform in order to amuse or interest people. The word can refer to singers, actors, comedians, hosts, and other performers.
entertain が核で、「楽しませる・退屈させない」という感覚をまず押さえると覚えやすいです。そこに人を表す -er が付いて entertainer=「人を楽しませる人」。entertainment, entertaining まで同じ語族でまとめると定着します。artist や performer よりも、「観客・客を楽しませる役目」が前に出やすい語で、comedian, singer, actor などをまとめて包む広めの言い方。TV entertainer, live entertainer のように“人前を盛り上げる人”という場面で結び付けると忘れにくいです。
Start from `entertain`, meaning to keep people interested and pleased. Add `-er`, the common ending for a person who does something, and you get `entertainer`. It belongs to the same family as `entertainment` and `entertaining`, which makes the whole group easier to remember.
The entertainer had the audience laughing throughout the entire show.
その芸人はショーの間中、観客を笑わせ続けた。
She trained for years to become a professional entertainer.
彼女はプロの芸能人になるために何年も訓練を積んだ。
The famous entertainer donated a large portion of his earnings to charity.
Entertainer comes from entertain plus the agent ending -er. Entertain comes from Old French entretenir, literally "to hold together" or "keep occupied," from elements related to "between" and "hold." The meaning shifted from keeping someone engaged or cared for to amusing them, so an entertainer is someone who holds people's attention.
