ボッシュ

解説 Definition

(くだけた・やや古風)ばかげた話、たわごと、ナンセンス。発言や考えを強く退ける際にも用いる不可算名詞。

Bosh is an informal, somewhat old-fashioned noun meaning foolish, empty, or untrue talk. It is used to dismiss a statement or idea as nonsense and can also appear as an exclamation of disbelief or rejection.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

bosh は「中身のない話」から「ばかげた話、たわごと」を表す、やや古風な不可算名詞。That's bosh. や What a load of bosh! のように、主張を強く退ける場面で使う。日本語表記の「ボッシュ」だけでなく、nonsense の古風で感情的な言い換えとして覚える。

Associate bosh with talk that is “empty” of sense or truth. That link reflects its historical source and gives a reliable memory cue without inventing a sound story. Learn it beside the more common word nonsense: That's bosh means roughly “That's nonsense.” It can also be exclaimed by itself—Bosh!—to reject an idea sharply. The word now sounds informal and rather old-fashioned, so it is more likely in humorous, literary, or deliberately emphatic speech than in neutral everyday conversation. Do not confuse it with Bosch, the capitalized surname and company name.

例文

That's absolute bosh.

そんなのはまったくのたわごとです。

What a load of bosh!

なんてばかげた話だ!

Bosh! I don't believe a word of it.

でたらめだ!そんな話は一言も信じない。

bosh の語源・成り立ち Etymology

bosh はトルコ語 boş「空っぽの、むなしい」から英語に入った語で、もとは「中身がない」という感覚の言葉です。英語で目立つ同根語はほぼありませんが、価値も内容も空っぽだから「ばかげた話、たわごと」へ進んだと考えると納得しやすいです。

English bosh was borrowed in the nineteenth century from Turkish boş, meaning “empty,” “vacant,” or “worthless.” It became known in English through literary use and developed the sense of speech or ideas that are empty of value or sense. From there it came to mean “nonsense” or “foolish talk,” and it could also be used as a dismissive exclamation. The word has no prominent family of native English derivatives.
