黄麻布とは、黄麻という植物の繊維から作られた粗い織布です。主に麻袋やロープの製造に使用されます。

burlap はおそらく古フランス語 burel「粗い毛織物」に由来する burl 系と、lap「布切れ」が合わさった語です。分けて見ると「ごわごわした布の一片」で、黄麻布の荒い手触りがそのまま語義になっています。bureau も同じ burel 系の仲間です。
