「candidature」はフランス語経由でラテン語 candidatus にさかのぼり、語幹 cand- は「白く光る」。古代ローマで立候補者が白い衣を着たことから「候補者」となり、-ature が名詞化した。candidate や candid も同じ根。
Candidature came into English through French and goes back to Latin candidatus. That Latin word is from candidus, meaning "white" or "shining," because Roman political candidates wore white clothing. Over time, the idea moved from the white robe to the status of being a candidate; candidate and candid share the same root.
