峡谷

峡谷（きょうこく）とは、険しい崖に挟まれた、川によって削られたV字形の谷を意味します。自然地形の一つです。
A canyon is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides, usually formed by a river over a long time. It is a word often used in geography, nature, and travel. Canyons are usually larger and deeper than ordinary valleys.

「canyon」はメキシコ系スペイン語 cañon に由来し、これはラテン語 canna「葦・管」にさかのぼるので、語幹 cann-/can- には「細長い管」の感覚があります。cane や cannon と同根で、大地の裂け目が「巨大な管のような深い通り道」と見立てられたから峡谷を表すのです。
From Spanish cañón, especially in Mexican Spanish, from Latin canna, meaning "reed" or "tube." The root carries the idea of a long hollow channel, and it also appears in English cane and cannon. That image of a deep tube-like passage helped the word come to mean a steep, narrow valley.
