coho は米北西部の先住民語ハルコメレム語に由来する魚名で、ラテン語のような接頭辞分解より「土地の呼び名がそのまま英語化した」語。chinook や sockeye と同じく先住民語由来で、土地に根ざした名だからこそ、このサケだけの実感ある呼び名になった。
Coho comes from a Native language of the Pacific Northwest, probably Halkomelem. Unlike many English words built from Latin or Greek parts, it was borrowed as a local name for the fish itself.
