To construe means to understand or explain the meaning of something in a particular way. It is often used when talking about words, actions, or events that can be interpreted differently. The word is common in formal, legal, and academic English.

construe はラテン語 construere に由来し、con-「共に」+ struere「積む・組み立てる」から成ります。もともと語を並べて文の形を作ることから、意味を「組み立てて解釈する」へ進みました。construct や structure も同じ語根です。
Construe comes from Latin construere, built from con- "together" and struere "to pile up" or "build." It first had the idea of arranging words or parts into a structure. From there, it came to mean building up a meaning in the mind, that is, interpreting something; related words include construct and structure.
