Counteracting means acting against something in order to reduce, prevent, or stop its effect. It is often used for problems, harmful influences, or negative changes. The idea is not just opposing something, but trying to weaken its result.

まず base の counteract で覚えるとよいです。counter は counterattack, countermeasure の counter と同じで「逆向きに返す」、act は「作用する」。つまり「相手の作用に対して、逆向きの作用をぶつけて効きを打ち消す」という絵でつかむと残ります。oppose がただ反対する、prevent が起こる前に防ぐのに対し、counteract はすでにある effect や impact を相殺する感じ。counteract the effects of stress のような形でよく出ます。
