It is connected with Old North French croche, “hook,” and with a Germanic group represented by Old Norse krókr, also meaning “hook.” The sense of a fork where a tree or object divides came before the anatomical use. Because the legs divide at that point, the word was extended to the human body and then to the corresponding part of clothing.
