Memory Tip

the crotch of a treetrousers tight in the crotch

Start with the shape rather than the body part: a crotch is a place where one form divides into two, like the fork of a tree. The same V-shaped idea was then applied to the place where the legs meet the torso and to the matching section of trousers. Learn both the crotch of a tree and trousers that are tight in the crotch. Compare groin, which more specifically names the crease or anatomical region on either side between the abdomen and thigh and is common in medical or sports contexts.

Etymology

Crotch developed from an earlier word for a hook, fork, or branching shape. It is connected with Old North French croche, “hook,” and with a Germanic group represented by Old Norse krókr, also meaning “hook.” The sense of a fork where a tree or object divides came before the anatomical use. Because the legs divide at that point, the word was extended to the human body and then to the corresponding part of clothing.
