Crusading is the -ing form of crusade. Crusade entered English through French forms related to crois, “cross,” and ultimately Latin crux, “cross.” The historical name referred to military expeditions whose Christian participants adopted the cross as their emblem. English later turned crusade into a verb meaning to participate in such an expedition. Its meaning was subsequently extended to vigorous organized efforts for political, moral, or social causes, producing both historical and figurative uses of crusading.
