dado の語源・成り立ち Etymology
dado はイタリア語 dado「さいころ、立方体」由来で、ラテン語 datum「与えられたもの」に通じる。data や date も同根。建築で腰壁や台座の中段を指すのは、四角く切り分けた立方体のような区画に見えたからだ。
Dado comes from Italian dado, meaning "die" or "cube." It is related to Latin datum, and so it belongs to the same larger family as data and date. In architecture, the word shifted to a square or block-like section, probably because the form suggested something cut into neat cubic parts.
