Etymology
Defrauding is the -ing form of defraud. Defraud comes through French from Latin defraudare, “to cheat or deprive by fraud.” The Latin formation combines de-, carrying the idea of removal or deprivation, with fraus, meaning deceit or fraud. Its historical core is therefore taking something away through deception. English fraud and fraudulent preserve the same central notion of deliberate dishonesty for gain.
