A doubter is a person who does not easily believe something. This word is used for someone who questions ideas, claims, plans, or other people's abilities. It can describe healthy skepticism or a more negative lack of trust.

Start from `doubt`, then add `-er`, the common ending for a person who does something. So a `doubter` is built the same way as `teacher` or `believer`. It sticks well if you contrast it with `believer`: one accepts, the other questions.

doubt は古フランス語 douter を経て、ラテン語 dubitare「二つの間で揺れる」にさかのぼります。dub- には決めきれず揺れる感覚があり、dubious や double も同根。doubter は心が二つに割れて信じきれない人です。
Doubter comes from doubt, which entered English through Old French douter from Latin dubitare. That Latin word carried the idea of wavering between two possibilities, which is why it is related to dubious and also to double. Doubter was formed in English for a person who wavers and cannot fully accept or believe.
