Erythema is redness of the skin, usually caused by irritation, inflammation, heat, or illness. It is a medical term used by doctors and in health-related writing. It describes a visible condition, not a disease itself.

まず erythro- を見たら、医療英語では red 系と反応できるようにすると覚えやすいです。erythrocyte 赤血球 や erythropoietin を見たことがあれば、erythema も 皮膚が赤い状態 と自然につながります。診察文では facial erythema、skin erythema、mild erythema など症状名として出やすく、edema むくみ と形が少し似るので混同注意。赤みは erythema、腫れは edema とセットで整理すると残りやすいです。

Erythema came into English through New Latin from Greek erythema, meaning "redness" or "a red condition." It is built from erythr- "red" and -ema, a suffix for the result of an action or process.
