expungementはラテン語expungere「突いて消す」に由来し、ex-「外へ」＋pungere「刺す」から成ります。punctureやpungentも同じpung-系で、文字や記録を刺して帳簿から除く感覚が、法的な「抹消」へつながりました。
Expungement comes from Latin expungere, meaning "to prick out" or "erase by marking." It joins ex-, "out," with pungere, "to prick" or "to sting."
