feint は古フランス語 feinte「見せかけの動き」で、動詞 feindre「装う」にさかのぼり、さらにラテン語 fingere「形作る・作り話をする」へ続きます。本物の攻撃を“作って見せる”発想なので、相手をだますフェイントの意味になります。feign、fiction が同根です。
