Memory Tip
Connect garlic with the familiar food term “garlic bread,” then picture the actual bulb used in cooking. Learn it through common combinations such as a clove of garlic, chopped garlic, garlic sauce, and the smell of garlic. Its old word structure also provides a useful image: the first element meant “spear,” while the second referred to a leek-like plant. The long, pointed leaves were therefore associated with a spear, linking the name to both the plant’s shape and its botanical relatives.

Etymology
Garlic comes from Old English gārlēac. The first element, gār, meant “spear,” and the second, lēac, referred to a leek or related plant. The compound probably described the plant through its long, spear-like leaves. Leek descends from the same second element, while the first is historically related to words for a spear in other Germanic languages.
