gastronomy はギリシャ語 gaster「胃」と nomos「法・取り決め」が結びついた語で、フランス語 gastronomie を経て入った語です。gastric や gastritis と同じ gastr- をもち、「胃を満たす営みの法則」という感覚から、美食学という意味が腑に落ちます。
Gastronomy came through French gastronomie from Greek roots: gaster, meaning "stomach," and nomos, meaning "rule" or "arrangement." It shares its gastr- root with words like gastric and gastritis. The idea developed from the "rules of the stomach" to the art and knowledge of fine food and eating.
