解説 Definition
光が金属・宝石・水面・目などの表面で一瞬鋭く反射して、きらりと見えることを表す動詞。長く輝き続けるというより、短く強い光がちらっと走る感じを表し、目つきや感情が鋭く表れる比喩にも使われる。
To glint means to shine with a small, quick flash of light. It is often used when light reflects briefly from metal, glass, water, or someone's eyes.

glitter を知っていれば覚えやすい語で、glint は glitter のようにキラキラ続く光ではなく、「一瞬だけ鋭くきらっ」と走る光。金属・宝石・水面・目が glint in the sun/light の形でよく出る。glow がぼんやり光る、gleam がやや上品に光るのに対し、glint は短く鋭い反射。a glint in his eye なら目の奥に鋭さやいたずらっぽさがちらっと見える感じ。
Think of `glitter`, but shorter and sharper. `Glint` is the quick flash you see from metal, water, glass, or eyes, often in `glint in the sun/light`. It is not soft like `glow` and not long like `glitter`.

glint はスコットランド語を経た中英語 glenten にさかのぼり、古ノルド語系の「きらっと光る」語群に連なります。glitter や glimpse と近い仲間で、強く照らすのでなく一瞬だけ鋭く光が走る感じが、そのまま語の意味に残っています。
From Middle English glenten, a form found especially in Scots, and probably linked to Old Norse words for flashing or shining. It belongs to the same family as English words like glitter and glimpse. The idea stayed close to a quick, sharp flash of light rather than a steady shine.
