gridiron は見た目どおり grid＋iron の語に見えますが、実際は古い gridire が iron に引き寄せられてできた形です。火にかける鉄の格子から「すのこ」の意味になり、関連語に grill と griddle があります。
Gridiron looks like a simple combination of grid and iron, but it developed from an older form, gridire, later reshaped by the familiar word iron.
