gridiron は見た目どおり grid＋iron の語に見えますが、実際は古い gridire が iron に引き寄せられてできた形です。もとは火にかける鉄の格子を指し、その格子模様から、ヤードラインが並ぶアメリカンフットボールの競技場も gridiron と呼ばれるようになりました。
Gridiron looks like a simple combination of grid and iron, but it developed from an older form, gridire, later reshaped by the familiar word iron.
