gusset は古フランス語 gousset「小袋・ふくらみ」に由来し、布に余裕を足す部材を指すようになった語。英語の gusseted やフランス語 gousset と同根で、布を少しふくらませる発想が「マチ」につながる。
Gusset comes from Old French gousset, which meant a small pouch or bulge. The idea of a little added piece that makes room or fullness later became the sewing sense in English. So the word moved from something puffed out to a piece of cloth inserted for extra space. A related form is gusseted.
