周囲が変化や合意に応じる中で、最後まで抵抗し続ける人や集団。
覚え方のコツ
まず句動詞 hold out をひとかたまりで覚える。「持ちこたえる・条件をのまず粘る」の hold out が、そのまま人や集団を表す名詞になったのが holdout。ポイントは out の感覚で、みんなが合意や変化の内側へ入っていくのに、その人だけ外に残って譲らない。単なる opponent や resister よりも『大勢が折れた後も最後まで残る抵抗者』の響きが強い。the last holdout, union holdouts, one remaining holdout のような言い方で見かけたら、「最後まで合流しない側」と結びつけると覚えやすい。
