Etymology
Indulging is formed from indulge by dropping the final silent e and adding -ing. Indulge entered English through Latin indulgere, meaning “to be kind, yield, or grant.” Its more remote internal formation is not fully certain, so a precise division into productive modern prefixes and roots can be misleading. The same Latin source produced indulgence and indulgent, all of which retain the idea of allowing or yielding to a wish or pleasure.
