knock down は knock「ごつんと打つ」と down「下へ」の組み合わせです。knock は中英語 knokken で打撃音をまねた語とされ、down は古英語 dūn 由来で downhill や downfall と同根。『打って下へ落とす』から『打ち倒す』になりました。
`Knock` comes from Middle English `knokken` and is thought to be imitative, copying the sound of a blow. `Down` comes from Old English `dun`, meaning downward. Together, `knock down` originally meant to strike something so it falls, and then came to mean defeating or bringing something lower.
