覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
level「平らにする」に -ing が付いた形です。高い所を削り、低い所を埋めて高低差をなくす作業を思い浮かべ、英国式では l を重ねると覚えましょう。
Start with level, meaning make flat or even, and add -ing. Picture removing bumps and filling low places. Remember to double the final l in the British spelling levelling.

levelling の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古期フランス語経由でラテン語の「小さな天秤」libellaに由来し、「-ing」が動作名詞を作ります。天秤が左右で釣り合うイメージから、高低差をなくし水平に揃える動作を意味します。同語根に「均衡」のequilibriumなどがあります。
Levelling consists of level plus the participial and gerund ending -ing, with the final l doubled according to the usual British spelling convention. Level came through Old French from Latin libella, a diminutive of libra, “balance or scales.” A balancing instrument indicated whether a surface was even, so the word developed adjectival and verbal senses connected with equal height and flatness. American spelling commonly uses leveling.
