解説 Definition
水準、段階、レベルという意味です。日本語の「レベル」と近い意味で使えますが、英語では学力、難しさ、高さなど幅広い水準を表します。
A level is a particular position on a scale of ability, difficulty, quality, amount, or height. It can indicate how advanced, high, low, easy, or difficult something is relative to other positions on the same scale.

日本語の「レベル」とほぼ同じですが、英語では difficulty level「難易度」、English level「英語力の水準」、water level「水位」のように、能力・難しさ・高さなどを測る基準上の位置を広く表します。stage が進行上の段階を表しやすいのに対し、level は上下の尺度を意識する語です。
The Japanese loanword レベル provides a useful starting point, but English level covers several kinds of measured position. Picture a scale with higher and lower points: an English level shows ability, a difficulty level shows how hard something is, and a water level shows height. Common patterns include high level, low level, and choose the right level. Compare stage, which often emphasizes a step in a process or period of development. Level more strongly suggests a position on a scale, even when no physical measuring instrument is present.

level の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 libella（水準器、天秤）から古フランス語 livel を経て英語に。語根 libra（天秤）は「釣り合い」を意味し、水平・均等の概念へ発展した。関連語: libra（天秤座）、deliberate（熟慮する＝天秤にかけて考える）。
Level entered English through Old French livel, ultimately from Latin libella, a diminutive of libra, “balance” or “scales.” Libella also referred to an instrument used to establish a horizontal line. The idea of something being balanced or horizontally even developed into the senses of equal height and, later, a position on an abstract scale of ability, quality, difficulty, or importance.
