mainstreaming は main「主要な」（古英語 mægen 系）+ stream「流れ」（古英語 stream）に -ing が付いた語です。社会の中心的な流れへ入れるという発想が、そのまま「主流化」の意味になりました。関連語は mainstream、downstream。
