Stewing can mean the process of cooking food slowly in liquid over low heat. It can also mean a state of worrying or thinking about something for too long, usually in an anxious or angry way.
stewing はまず基本形 stew を軸に覚える。料理では boil のように激しく沸かすのでなく、simmer に近い「弱火で具を汁ごとじっくり煮る」感覚。beef stew のような、鍋の中で肉や野菜が長く火にかかる場面と結びつけると残りやすい。
Start with cooking: `stew` means to cook slowly in liquid, not fast like a hard boil. That slow, heavy image also explains the mental use: if you are `stewing over` something, the thought keeps slowly boiling inside you. Remember the phrase `stewing over it`.
Stewing beef with root vegetables creates a hearty winter meal.
牛肉を根菜と煮込むと、冬にぴったりのボリュームのある料理になる。
Stewing is an effective way to tenderize tougher cuts of meat.
煮込みは、硬めの肉を柔らかくするのに効果的な調理法だ。
Long, slow stewing brings out the deep flavours of the spices.
長時間のゆっくりとした煮込みはスパイスの深い味わいを引き出す。

stew は古フランス語 estuver「蒸気で温める」に由来し、さらに俗ラテン語系へさかのぼります。中心は stew「蒸す・煮込む」で、stewed や stewpot も同じ核を共有します。中でぐつぐつ煮える像から、「煮込み」だけでなく「くよくよする」にもなりました。
Stewing comes from stew, which came through Old French estuver, meaning to heat with steam, and probably from a Late Latin source. The original idea was warming or cooking slowly with heat and moisture. From the image of something bubbling away, English later also developed the figurative sense of mentally brooding or worrying.
