A manhole is an opening in a street, pavement, or other surface through which workers can enter an underground utility space, sewer, or pipe system. The term may also informally refer to the heavy cover placed over that opening.

Manhole is countable: use a manhole for one opening and manholes for more than one.
A manhole cover is the lid over the opening. Open a manhole describes opening it for access.
- climb down a manhole Use climb down a manhole to describe descending through the opening.
