marmot はフランス語 marmotte を経て英語に入り、さらにスイスのロマンシュ語 murmont、ラテン語 murem montis「山のねずみ」にたどれます。murem は「ねずみ」、montis は「山」で、見たままを言ったような名前です。だから「山地に住む大きなげっ歯類」という意味がすっと納得できます。関連語は murine, mountain です。
Marmot came into English through French marmotte. It is usually traced further back to a form meaning something like "mountain mouse," from Latin mur- "mouse" and mont- "mountain." The name reflects how people saw it: a rodent living in the mountains.
