martingaleは中世フランス語martingale、さらにオック語martegalo「マルティーグ風の」に由来します。地名由来なので、最初は「その土地式の馬具」ほどの意味で、そこから独特の賭け法名にも広がりました。marineやmaritimeは遠い親類です。
Martingale comes from French martingale, from Provençal or Occitan martegalo, meaning "of Martigues," a town in southern France. It was first a name for a style of horse equipment associated with that place. Later, the same name was extended to other special devices and even to a gambling system.
