mortificationは後期ラテン語mortificatioに由来し、morti-「死」+ fic「作る」+ -ation「行為」に分けられます。もとは「死なせること」で、肉欲を殺す苦行や組織の壊死を経て「面目をつぶされる屈辱」に広がりました。mortalやmortuaryも同じmort-です。
