observe を知っていれば、observable は「observe できるもの」と分解して覚えると定着しやすいです。-able は readable, measurable などと同じく「〜できる」。特に科学では directly observable effect のように、理論上あるだけでなく、実際に観察・測定で確かめられるという含みが強い語です。visible が単に『見える』なのに対し、observable は『観察対象として確認できる』に近いので、その差もセットで覚えると混同しにくくなります。

observable はラテン語 observare「よく見る・見守る」から来た observe に、可能を表す -able が付いた語。ob-「向かって」+ servare「保つ・見守る」で、「目を向けて保つ」感覚から「観察可能な」となる。関連語は observe、observatory。
Observable comes from observe plus the suffix -able.
