鈍い
解説 Definition
90度より大きく180度より小さい角度を指す。理解力や反応が鈍くて物事をすばやくつかめない様子や人にも使う形容詞。
If a person is obtuse, they are slow to understand or notice something, especially something that seems obvious. It is usually a critical word; in math, it also describes an angle that is greater than 90 degrees.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
数学の acute angle（鋭角）とセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。acute は「鋭い」ので、obtuse angle はその反対で「先が鈍く、開きが大きい角」＝鈍角。ここから意味が広がって、an obtuse person / be obtuse about a hint なら「のみこみが鈍い、察しが悪い」。まず「角が鈍い」→「頭や反応が鈍い」の順でつなげると忘れにくいです。abstruse（難解な）と形が少し似ているので混同注意。

obtuseはラテン語obtusus「鈍くされた」に由来し、ob-「向かって」＋tundere「打つ」が下敷きです。何度も打たれて刃先が丸くなるイメージから、角や感覚が「鈍い」という意味になりました。obtundやcontusionも同根です。
