ビデオゲームやファンタジー設定における地上世界を指す用語。地下や異世界と対比される上界または表世界を意味する。
The overworld is the world on the surface of the earth, especially in contrast to an underground world or underworld. It is common in fantasy stories, mythology, and video games. In games, it often means the main outside area where players travel between locations.

over + world と見れば覚えやすい。over は「上に・上側の」、world は「世界」なので、地下迷宮や異界に対する「上の世界」という対比で定着させるとよい。特にゲーム文脈では underworld / underground とセットで覚えると混同しにくい。RPGでダンジョンから出て、町や草原を移動する広い地上マップを overworld と呼ぶ場面を思い浮かべると強い記憶フックになる。outside world のような「外の世界」ではなく、上下の対比が核。

overworld は古英語 ofer「上に」と world（古英語 woruld「人の世・世界」）の複合語です。overhead や worldwide と同じ発想で、地下や異界に対する「上の世界」と考えると、地上世界という意味がすっと入ります。
"Overworld" combines "over," from Old English "ofer," with "world," from Old English "woruld." The parts simply suggest the world above. Because of that, it developed the sense of the upper or surface world, especially in contrast with an underworld or other realm.
