ラテン語 plaga（打撃・傷）からフランス語を経て英語へ。原義は「神の一撃」で、疫病が天罰と見なされた中世の世界観を反映する。関連語に plaguey（厄介な）がある。「打ち付ける災い」が転じて疫病・ペストの意味になった。
