profligacyはラテン語profligare「打ち倒す、破滅させる」に由来し、pro-「前へ」+ fligere「打つ」と分けられます。そこから「身を持ち崩した状態」を表すようになり、profligateやconflictも同じflig系の仲間です。
Profligacy comes from Latin profligare, meaning "to strike down" or "to ruin." The idea moved from physical defeat to moral or personal ruin, and from there to wasteful, reckless behavior. It is related to profligate, which developed from the same Latin source.
