restraint は古仏語 restreinte を経て、ラテン語 restringere「後ろへ(re-)きつく縛る(stringere)」にさかのぼる。『ぎゅっと縛って動きを抑える』感覚が核で、そこから『拘束・抑制・自制』の意に広がった。strict、restrict も同系。
Restraint comes through Old French from Latin restringere, built from re- and stringere, meaning "to bind tight" or "draw tight." The original image is of tightening or tying something so it cannot move freely. From that, the word developed into senses like physical restraint, control, and self-control; restrict and strict are related.
