覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
property(財産)を持つ人が proprietor(所有者・事業主)、その「身分・経営形態」まで含めた名詞が proprietorship。まず property と同じ prop- 系で「所有」に結びつけると記憶しやすい。特に sole proprietorship で頻出し、会社を作るというより「個人がそのまま事業を持つ」形を指す。ownership より事業・法制度の匂いが強い語。partnership / membership の -ship と同じく「状態・形」を表す。proprietary と見分ける意識も持つと定着しやすい。
Link it to `property` and `proprietor`, both connected with owning something. The ending `-ship` often shows a state or form, so `proprietorship` is a form of ownership, especially in business. You will often see `sole proprietorship`, which is a common fixed phrase.

proprietorship の語源・成り立ち Etymology
proprietorshipはproprietor「所有者」に-ship「状態・身分」が付いた語で、奥にはラテン語proprius「自分自身の、固有の」がある。つまり「自分のものとして持つ状態」が核なので、単なる所持でなく法的な所有権の響きになる。propertyやproperも同根だ。
Proprietorship is formed from proprietor plus the suffix -ship, meaning a state or status. At its root is Latin proprius, meaning "one's own" or "special to oneself." The central idea is holding something as one's own in a formal sense, which is why the word developed a strong ownership meaning. Property and proper come from the same root.
