In sonata form, the recapitulation is the section after the development in which the principal themes return, normally centered on the home key.

recapitulation は、古フランス語 recapitulacion および後期ラテン語 recapitulatio（対格 recapitulationem）に由来します。後期ラテン語 recapitulare「主要点をもう一度述べる」は、re-「再び」と capitulum「主要部分・章、小さな頭」から成り、そこから「要約」の意味が生じました。
